Panopto: Getting Started

What is It?

 
Panopto is an external plugin in Moodle which allows students to access live and pre-recorded videos made by the instructor. Panopto also allows for students to submit video submissions. Panopto is accessible to both students and instructors without requiring a secondary login, making it user-friendly for all users. Additionally, it can serve as an effective means to reduce the overall course size. It is available to both students and instructors without the need for a secondary login and can be a great way to reduce course size.

Signing in to Moodle

Step 1:

In your web browser, navigate to your Moodle using the following link:

https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/


Step 2:

Enter your username and password and then select "SIGN IN."

  • Note: Links to help with passwords are on the Web Sign-on page. Those who cannot log into Moodle should contact the IT Help Center.

Adding Panopto as a Course Activity

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:

https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/

Note: If you are having any issues accessing Moodle please navigate to the Signing in to Moodle section.


Step 2:

All of your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one in which you will be adding Panopto.

Step 3:

On the top right part of the page turn the edit mode on.

Step 4:

Select the week you wish to add Panopto in, then select the (+) icon.

Step 5:

Select "Panopto" as outlined in the figure below.

Step 6:

Create a name for the Panopto Activity.

Step 7:

Select "Save and display."

  • Students will not be able to access their Panopto account on Panopto.com until they view the instructor's Panopto activity on Moodle. 
  • Make sure to warn students of this as this can lead to some confusion if they are trying to sign in on Panopto.com

How to Add & Provision a Panopto Block

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:

https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/

Note: If you are having any issues accessing Moodle please navigate to the Signing in to Moodle section.


Step 2:

Navigate to your course and turn the edit mode on.

Step 3:

Select the arrow located on the top right part of the screen.

Step 4:

Select "Add a Block."

Step 5:

Scroll down until you find Panopto, then select it.

Step 6:

You will now be able to view your Panopto block. If you need to Provision it select "Provision."

Step 7:

Your course will now be provisioned.

Upload a Pre-Recorded Video to Moodle

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:

https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/

Note: If you are having any issues accessing Moodle please navigate to the Signing in to Moodle section.


Step 2:

Navigate to your Moodle course and select your Panopto Activity.

Step 3:

You will then be met by a page resembling the figure below. 

  • If you are seeing error messages or your Panopto course isnt loading, you may need to Provision your Panopto

Step 4: 

Decrease your tab width to where you can see the video you wish to upload, then simply drag and drop the video

Step 5:

Your video will then begin to Upload. This process should be fairly quick.

Step 6:

Your video will then begin to Process, this will take some time depending on the size of your video file.

Step 7:

Once the video has processed, your video will be available to all students.

Panopto Video Assignments

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:

Step 2:

Navigate to your Moodle course and select your Panopto Activity.

Step 3:

You will then be met by a page resembling the figure below. 

  • If you are seeing error messages or your Panopto course isnt loading, you may need to Provision your Panopto

Step 4: 

Select the gear icon as outlined in the figure below.

Step 5:

Select "Create Assignment Folder."

Step 6:

Once you have created the folder, select your new assignment folder.

  • Selecting a folder/video will redirect you to a new tab.

Step 7: 

Select the gear icon as outlined in the figure below.

Step 8:

Select "Settings" from the sidebar.

Step 9:

You will have the option to make students posts public or private with the "Allow viewers to see each other's sessions" box. If selected, students can see all submitted videos. If disselected, they will only be able to see their own.

Step 10: 

To assign a due date you will need to scroll down to "Availability." After customizing your settings you may simply click the exit button. Panopto will automatically save all the changes you made.

Step 11:

Students will now be able to submit their assignments directly from the Moodle assignment page.

Live Stream a Lecture

You must download and install Panocto for windows to live stream a lecture.


Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:

https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/

Step 2:

Navigate to your Moodle course and select your Panopto Activity.

Step 3:

You will then be met by a page resembling the figure below. 

  • If you are seeing error messages or your Panopto course isnt loading, you may need to Provision your Panopto

Step 4: 

Select Panopto for Windows.

Step 5:

Select "Download Panopto."

Step 6:

Select the Panopto installer from the downloads bar.

Step 7: 

Select "Next."

Step 8:

Select "Install." The Panopto application should automatically open once it has been installed.

Step 9:

Navigate back to your Moodle course and select the Panopto Activity.


Step 10: 

Select the  symbol as outlined in the figure below. You will automatically be rerouted to Panopto's website.

Step 11:

Select  (+ Create ) located on the top left part of the screen.

Step 12:

Select "Webcast" from the drop-down menu

Step 13:

Give your lecture a name, then select "Create."

Step 14:

You will now have the ability to customize the lecture settings. Once you have finished doing so, select "Record."

Step 15:

Once you access the Panopto recording screen, select "Record."

Step 16:

Your lecture is now being streamed to all students enrolled in your course.
