Step-by-step guides to setting up a Moodle quiz.
- Note: To create an exam in Moodle, you must add it as a quiz. The steps in this article are applicable for both quizzes and exams.

Creating Question Banks
Step 1:
On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:
https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/
Step 2:
All your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one relevant to this guide.
Step 3:
Select the drop-down menu labeled "More," then select "Question Bank."
Step 4:
Select "Create a new question..."
Step 5:
You will have many options when creating a question. Select the one which best fits your question.
Step 6:
Remember to give your question a category when creating it.

Creating a Question in a Quiz
Step 1:
On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:
https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/
Step 2:
All your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one relevant to this guide.
Step 3:
Select the quiz in which you will be adding a question.
Step 4:
Select "Add question."
Step 5:
On the right side of the page there is a drop-down menu labeled "Add."
Step 6:
From the drop-down menu select " + a new question."
Step 7:
You will have many options when creating a question. Select the one which best fits your question.
Step 6:
Remember to give your question a category when creating it.

Clearing Quiz Attempts
Step 1:
On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:
https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/
Step 2:
All your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one relevant to this guide.
Step 3:
Select the quiz in which you will be clearing quiz attempts.
Step 4:
Select "Attempts."
Step 5:
Scroll down until you see a table.
- If you wish to download data before clearing quiz attempts, you may do so by selecting "Download."
Step 6:
You can select/deselect all students by checking the box outlined in the figure below. You also can select individual students by manually checking the box next to their names.
Step 7:
Once you have checked the box, select "Delete selected attempts."

Quiz Security
Take preventive measures against academic dishonesty by changing your quiz settings.
Timing -
Restrict the time in which students can take the quiz to a short, but manageable, duration to discourage collaboration.
One Question Per Page -
Limit the number of questions per page to discourage students from giving out earlier answers.
Shuffle Answer Order -
Shuffle the answers to multiple choice questions to discourage students from sharing the letter of each question.
Shuffle Question Order:
To access the shuffle question order option, navigate to the "Questions" tab in your quiz. Once redirected, you will be presented with the option to mark the box labeled "Shuffle," as depicted in the figure below.

Quiz Time Accommodations
Specific students or groups can be accommodated with extra time to take a quiz or test in Moodle.
Step 1:
On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:
https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/
Step 2:
All your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one relevant to this guide.
Step 3:
Select the quiz to which you will be adding extra time.
Step 4:
Select the drop-down menu labeled "More", then select "Overrides."
Step 5:
There is a search bar to the right of "Override user." Use this search bar to find and select the user who is being given extra time.
Step 6:
To the right of "Time limit" there is an option to select a box labeled "Enable." Then set a time limit.
Step 7:
You can now select either "Save" or "Save and enter another override."

Importing Question Banks
Step 1:
The downloaded file be in .imscc format. This is a Mac version of a zip file.
Step 2:
Rename the file by removing the ".imscc" to ".zip" as shown in the figure below.
Step 3:
You will be met with a warning message that the "file might become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?" Proceed by selecting "Yes."
Step 4:
Open the new extracted folder, then click on the folder name to open more files.
Step 5:
On your web browser, navigate to your Moodle homepage using the following link:
https://moodlemtech.mrooms3.net/
Step 6:
All your courses are listed on the homepage. Select the one relevant to this guide.
Step 7:
Select the drop-down menu labeled "More," then select "Question Bank."
Step 8:
There will be a drop-down menu labeled "Questions." Select the drop-down menu then select "Import."
Step 9:
Proceed by splitting your screen to reveal the file you recently opened as shown in the figure below.
Step 10:
It is recommended to select the "MDL" file OR the "BB" file depending on what files the publisher has given you. We have had the most success using these file types. In this article I will be showing how to import an "MDL" file.
- MDL - This file type is useful for importing individual chapters in a course.
- BB - This file type is useful for importing to new courses as you can import all the chapters at once. To do so, simply drag the entire "BB" file into the "Import questions from file" box. Make sure you do not use the zip version.
Step 11:
Open the "MDL" file to reveal individual chapters.
Step 12:
Drag the chapter file into the "Import questions from file" box. Make sure you do not use a zip version.
Step 13:
Once the file has imported into Moodle, select "Import."
Step 14:
You will be redirected to a new page, scroll down and select "Continue."
Step 15:
Your question bank has now been imported.
