Montana Tech VPN Policies

Faculty, Staff, and student employees wishing to establish a real-time connection to Montana Tech’s internal network through the internet must establish a virtual private network (VPN). Once the VPN is established you are connected to the network same as you are on campus. This creates a security risk that you must be made aware of. Please read this form in its entirety, and if you agree upon the usage / procedures complete the VPN request form.

1. Remote Computer Security

Remote computers that connect through VPN are connected to Montana Tech’s network, therefore they are subject to the same rules and regulations that apply to Montana Tech managed computers.

  • Software Security Patches. Remote computers must be up-to-date with the security patches for the operating system and applications that are installed.
  • Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software. Remote computers must have Anti-Virus and Anti-malware installed, these programs must be up-to-date. The remote computer must be free of viruses/malware. This includes personal machines.
  • Non-Tech owned equipment. Computers that are not owned by Montana Tech must configure the equipment to comply with Montana Tech’s Computer and Network Usage polices.

2. Responsibilities

  • It is the responsibility of the VPN user to ensure that unauthorized users are not allowed access to Montana Tech’s network.
  • Disconnect from the VPN, if you are not accessing Montana Tech resources. Do not leave the connection open.
