Research staff positions are classified into three categories: 1) Research Faculty; 2) Center Directors, and 3) Other Research Professionals (e.g. Post-Doctoral Research Associates, Research Scientist, Research Engineer).
All employees and units of the Montana university system (MUS) shall adhere to the following
procedures with respect to patentable inventions or discoveries. The purpose of these procedures is to
define the relationships among the inventor; the MUS; the unit, college, school, branch, division or agency of
the MUS; and outside sponsors of research within the MUS.
This policy describes Montana Tech’s principles for identifying and managing potential conflicts and for eliminating real conflicts of interest. It is accompanied by procedures for reviewing, eliminating, and managing such conflicts.
Federal regulations allow colleges and universities to add Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs to federally funded research to recover expenses for items and services that are provided or maintained on a campus-wide basis.
The purpose of this policy is to assure the integrity of research and scholarly activity conducted at
Montana Tech and by Montana Tech employees and students, to protect both the person alleging
research misconduct and the person whose research practices are being questioned, and to
comply with federal regulations for institutional management and oversight of research.
It may be appropriate for a department/center/institute to provide research, analytical, and related services for a fee to the external community. A department/center/institute may engage in direct sales of goods and services when: the production of goods or services is consistent with the normal activities of the department/center/institute; substantially supports the teaching, research, or outreach mission of the University; and, does not compete with the private sector.
This policy modifies the TARA waiver to apply to Graduate Teaching Assistants only. Graduate Research Assistants are removed from eligibility for non-resident TARA waivers, and GRAs will be charged full cost of tuition.
A Principal Investigator (PI) is the individual responsible for the preparation, conduct, and administration of a sponsored project. Anyone holding the following positions may be designated as a PI so long as they have attended a PI training:
All Faculty (tenure and non-tenure track; Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor)
All Staff
All Post-Doctoral Researchers, Research Associates, or Research Non-Tenure Track Faculty
