New User Logging in for the First Time

Before ANY Password changes can be preformed, the user will need to first acquire their default password.

  1. Navigate to the User Password Management page outline in Figure 1-1
    1. Accessing this page is outlined in Figure 1-2 through Figure 1-3
  2. Navigate to Need to look up your password for the first time Highlighted in Figure 1-1

Password Parameters

When dealing with passwords these are requirements to follow when users change or reset their passwords. 

At least six characters in length
Neither of your two previous passwords (if applicable)
Cannot contain username or real name
Must contain three of the four following categories:

  • Uppercase letters: A-Z
  • Lowercase letters: a-z
  • Numbers: 0-9
  • Special characters: !, @, ?, etc

NOTE: These are just the Parameters here at Tech but there are other things you can do to help make your password more secure.

Here are some things a user can do to increase the strength of their password

  • Increasing the characters from 12-14 at the least
  • Not a word that can be found in a dictionary or the name of a person, character, product, or organization

Once you have changed your password, the system can take up to 15 minutes to update. Please wait 15 minutes before attempting to log in to any Montana Tech systems. Additionally, make sure you clear any saved passwords in your browsers, password managers, or WiFi. If you or an automatic service attempts to login to your account 5 or more times in 30 minutes, your account will be locked for 30 minutes.

Changing Your Password (On Campus)

Users have the ability to change their passwords.  Doing this can be necessary if the current password is expired or if it is compromised.  Users must know their current password to change it.  If you have forgotten your password see Forgot Your Password? instead. 

To change your password:

  1. Log-on to a campus computer with your current credentials.

  2. Once you are logged on, press CTRL+ALT+DEL on the keyboard.

  3. Select "Change a password…" Refer to Figure 4-1-1 or Figure 4-2-1

  4. Type in your old password, your new password, and then confirm your new password. Refer to Figure 4-1-2 or Figure 4-2-2

Forgot Your Password?

If you need a password reset, you can either try logging into your Microsoft account and pressing the Forgot my password button or go to the Montana knowledge base article for password reset and press the highlighted link below.

Step 2:

Clicking on the link will take you to this page. Input your username or email and solve the CAPTCHA (enter the characters in the picture in the textbox). Then click Next.

Step 3:

Once your information has been entered, it will ask you why you are having trouble signing in. This section covers the forgetting password section, so click that one and then hit Next.

Step 4:

The site will now ask for your verification code from the DUO mobile app you have set up. Put in your verification code and then hit Next.

Step 5:

Now you must enter your new password and confirm it. Then click Finish and your password should now be reset.

Unlocking your Account

Unlock Your Account

Step 1:

If you need to unlock your account, you can either try logging into your Microsoft account and pressing the Forgot my password button or go to the Montana knowledge base article for password reset and press the highlighted link.

Step 2:

Step 3:

In this section, we want to select “I know my password, but still can’t sign in”

Step 4:

The site will now ask for your verification code from the DUO mobile app you have set up. Put in your verification code and then hit Next. If this has not been set up yet, this will not work. This should then automatically unlock your account and you can sign in like normal.
