What Is It?

Step-by-step guides to setting up a Canvas quiz. 

The steps in this article are applicable for both quizzes and exams.

  1. Creating Question Banks To create a Question Bank in Canvas you must locate the "Courses" tab, and select "Quizzes" on the left hand accessory bar. From there select the kebab (3 dots)   *Click this Image to view Full*   Select   "+Add question Bank"   NOTE: Unfiled Questions is something to sort through as it is an automatic application to the page once you create anything having to do with quizzes.
  2. Creating a Question in a Quiz Edit the quiz, select the quiz desired, then select edit (upper right hand corner) and be sure to note if the quiz you are editing has students taking it, or already taken it. + a question, and you may also use the Question Bank to add more.
  3. Clearing Quiz Attempts
    • Accessing quiz attempts and how to clear them.
  4. Quiz Security
    • Make your quizzes more secure and prevent academic dishonesty.
  5. Quiz Time Accommodations
    • Specific students or groups can be accommodated with extra time to take a quiz or test in Canvas.
  6. Importing Question Banks
    • Import a quiz/exam question bank into Canvas: Go to "Courses", then select settings on the left lower part of the accessory bar, on the right side there is an option for Import. Import content, then it will ask the content type choose the type EX) QIT. zip, then you may fill in "source" and import. this also creates a bank

Creating Question Banks

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

mtech.instructure.com


Step 2:

Select "Courses" off of the accessory bar to the left.

Step 3:

Select "Quizzes" from the courses tab, then locate the kebab in the upper right corner.

Step 4:

Select "Manage Question Banks" And "+Add Question Bank"

Step 5:

You must create a title. The ribbon icon in the line suggests a bookmark > Select this if you choose to see this specific bank from all courses.

Creating a Question in a Quiz

Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

https://mtech.instructure.com


Step 2:

Open your courses tab, and locate quizzes. From here select the quiz you want to add a question to. 

 


Step 3:

Once selected navigate to "Edit" and click. it will bring you to where you can now select the questions part of the page

From here you may +New Question, +New Question Group, Or Find Questions (from the bank)


Step 4:

Select "+New Question."

And make it the way you want it.

NOTE: This option may be below all existing questions, so it may need to be scrolled to

NOTE:  Check "Notify Users This Quiz Has Changed" at the bottom of the question where the save option is.

This is to ensure that students are informed of the edits and check their work.

Step 5:

 

You will have many options when creating a question. Select what best fits your question.

Step 6:

Remember to give your question a category or name when creating it. By clicking on it you should change it from "Question" to anything else.

Clearing Quiz Attempts

Step 1:

Quiz Attempts can not be cleared on Canvas, but additional attempts to the quiz may be added

Select the quiz you would like to add attempts to.

Using the 3 dots icon (upper right of page) you will have the option to choose the highlighted toggle


 

Step 2:

If you so choose, you may allow students additional attempts.

Quiz Security

Take preventive measures against academic dishonesty by changing your quiz settings.

Timing - 

Restrict the time in which students can take the quiz to a short, but manageable, duration to discourage collaboration.

You can locate this ability through creating quizzes and navigating quiz details

One Question Per Page - 

Limit the number of questions per page to discourage students from giving out earlier answers.

   On the same page as listed on Timing-, you can locate one question at a time

Shuffle Answer Order - 

Shuffle the answers to multiple choice questions to discourage students from sharing the letter of each question.

Shuffle Answers - This is a check box option under quiz settings and will randomize the order of the question's answer choices.

**If your quiz question has an answer like “all of the above/below” or “answer A & C” do not use the “shuffle answer” setting.**

Quiz Time Accommodations

Specific students or groups can be accommodated with extra time to take a quiz or test in Canvas. 

 


Step 1:

On your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

 


 

Step 2:

Locate Courses Tab and click Quizzes. 

Select the quiz you would like to edit

Select "Assign To" near the top

Step 4:

Select the "Add" button at the bottom, and select the user that requires more time. You can assign the quiz to them separately, with their accommodations in mind.

Note: Assigning a new version of the quiz will change the other assignment to "everyone else".


Step 5:

There is a search bar to the right of "Override user." Use this search bar to find and select the user who is being given extra time.

Save your selections.

Importing Question Banks

Step 1:

Navigate to settings from the Course tab, on the right hand accessory bar select "Import Course Content"

Step 2:

From there you can choose the content type

Then you can select the specific course, course name and whether you want to include completed courses

Finally choose specific content on its own that you desire


Step 3:

Import the course

Step 4:

Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)Current Jobs section is the status of the import. Running reports display a progress bar indicating the time remaining to complete the import.


Step 5:

Finally, on your web browser, navigate to your Canvas homepage using the following link:

 

And then check where the Question Bank went so that it gets confirmed the right placement of your choosing
