What Is It?

In response to the increasing number of support requests made to Information Technology (IT) regarding personally owned computing devices (POCD), Montana Tech IT has established an official POCD support policy. The purpose of this policy is to define the support options available for personally owned computing devices.

Personal Computer Device Support Policy

Devices and Support Montana Tech IT will prioritize the support of Montana Tech owned computing devices and production information systems and provide only limited support for POCD. Limited support for POCD devices is defined as:

POCD usage of the eduroam, MTGuest, MTDorms, and MTPodium wireless networks

Montana Tech IT will:

  • Maintain the availability of the eduroam, MTGuest, MTDorms, and MTPodium wireless networks.
  • Maintain the availability of the authentication systems for the eduroam, MTGuest, MTDorms, and MTPodium wireless networks.
  • Verify that Montana Tech IT supplied authentication credentials are valid.

POCD usage of Audio/Visual (AV), Computer Lab, and Classroom Technology systems

Montana Tech IT will:

  • Maintain the availability of the AV, Computer Lab, and Classroom Technology systems.
  • Verify that Montana Tech IT owned computing devices are able to operate AV, Computer Lab, and Classroom Technology systems.

Additional POCD support

  • Troubleshoot connectivity issues to Montana Tech owned computing devices and production information systems on POCD.
  • Troubleshoot authentication issues to Montana Tech owned computing devices and production information systems on POCD.
  • Configuration of POCD for communication with the Montana Tech e-mail system.

  • Configure appropriate VPN and/or Remote Desktop access to Montana Tech owned computing devices and production information systems on POCD.

  • Configure appropriate wired network access on POCD.

  • Ensure wireless network, wired network, AV, Computer Lab, Classroom Technology, and enterprise software compatibility. Should you have concerns regarding compatibility, please consult with Montana Tech IT prior to purchasing any devices you intend to use on Montana Tech IT services.

POCD support not provided

Including, but not limited to:

  • Troubleshoot POCD performance or hardware problems.
  • Troubleshoot personally owned software applications or cloud services.
  • Install OS upgrades, OS patches, or Montana Tech owned software on POCD.
  • Install personally owned software on POCD.
  • Back up device data or migrate data to a new device
  • Remove malware or spyware
